Home After a Wonderful Holiday!

Saturday July 12th 2014

Well we have now been home for 48 hours after our wonderful holiday ended in Prague on Wednesday. Here is a summary of our trip home.

Our transfer arrived on time at the hotel and we were delivered to Prague airport at around 1pm. As we had done our on-line check-in the night before from our hotel, the process was very smooth & we didn't have any wait at all. My large suitcase which weighed in at 19.5kg when we left Sydney in May now weighs 26.5kg, however, much of the excess belongs to Mike's toiletry bag & a few other items I kindly carried for him as his suitcase was full. I also checked in my "carry on" suitcase to save lugging it around & still came in under the allowed weight! As I said previously, very few souvenirs were purchased this trip. Emirates do not have a Business Lounge at this airport, however their passengers do have the use of The Menzies Lounge which, although quite small, has plenty of snacks, tea, coffee, wine & spirits (self serve) to keep you occupied whilst you wait for your flight.

We boarded promptly & the plane actually departed about 15 minutes before schedule, which is unusual. The plane did not seem to be full & we counted 12 empty seats just in our section of business class. So there goes the theory of being upgraded if empty seats in first or business class! Of course it was good for us as there seemed to be heaps of staff around. The flight was very smooth & we landed in Dubai at 11pm, almost an hour early.

We spent approximately 2 hours in the Business Lounge in Dubai which is enormous. They have several different areas serving complimentary meals, snacks, sweets soft drinks & alcohol. We didn't feel like any food as we had not long eaten on the flight from Prague, so just had a couple of soft drinks.

Our flight to Sydney on the A380 Airbus left on time at 2.15am & this time the plane was full in all classes. It was actually a codeshare with Qantas. We were upstairs and it was very comfortable with the new "pod" setup. It was fun playing with all the buttons for the seat recliner tray table, TV etc. They have a full bar at the back of the plane where you can sit & have a drink or three if you wish. They also serve snacks etc. Because of the time of our flight we actually declined any alcohol the entire time. Most of the first 12 hours were spent napping, reading & watching movies. I think Mike watched about 7 the entire 2 flights (between naps), I managed to see just one (Saving Mr Banks) which I enjoyed. Tried to get interested in a couple of others but turned them off after a few minutes. The food served is very good quality, except you soon learn that the less you eat the better you feel. We just made sure we drank lot's of water & fruit juice.

Arrived in Sydney around 9.50pm, a little early, and breezed through duty free, luggage collection & customs. We had a trolley so just pushed our luggage across the road from the International Terminal to the Rydges Hotel where we had pre-booked a room for the night. It was a simple process to check-in & we were in our room by 10.30pm. Luckily we had placed anything needed for this short stay in our small bags, so no need to open our large suitcases. Of course the first port of call was a shower!

After a reasonable sleep, considering our upside down body clocks, we had a nice breakfast, collected the keys to our rental car & headed for home around 9.30am. It was very cold (looked like it was going to snow) in the Blue Mountains when we stopped for a coffee, so decided to make sure we arrived home before it started. We made good time arriving home in Bathurst at 1pm.

All was well at home as our house sitter had done a wonderful job. Buffy, our dog, was surprisingly  underwhelmed to see us. I suspect she has been very spoiled whilst we were away.

After dropping off the rental car & grabbing a few basic grocery items, we came home for a much needed rest. We were (& still are) feeling quite jet-lagged as well as fighting off the colds we have picked up for the 2nd time this trip. So it is now Saturday afternoon & we have not left the house since Thursday. I can't wait to get back into a decent sleeping pattern!

No photos today folks, I had great intentions of taking some on the plane, but obviously forgot.

I am hoping to do a summary of our trip with some more photos in the next week or two, so stay tuned.

Thanks to everyone who has followed this blog. I really enjoyed receiving emails from many of you.

Until next time.

Last Day in Prague

Monday July 7th 2014

Well this will be my shortest ever post!

Today we did very little, except Mike walked to Charles bridge & checked out a couple of hobby shops, then had a brief stop at Marks & Spencers on the way back to our Hotel. I just went for a walk to Wenceslas  Square, checked out a few shops, had a coffee & came back to the hotel. It was very hot & humid here today, with storms late afternoon.

We declined two optional tours, both over an hours coach ride each way from Prague & decided to have a very quiet day. We are both feeling very tired so feel justified in taking the day off as we have walked all over Europe this past 8 + weeks!

Tonight we just had a light dinner (Caesar Salad) in the bar downstairs & now just starting to sort out packing etc for tomorrow. Luckily we have a late checkout (12MD) with an airport transfer booked for 12.30pm. So can have a little sleep in and just have a final look at Prague before we leave for home.

The time has really flown & we can't believe that tomorrow it will all be over. Now the end is in sight, I am really keen to get home (despite the the cold weather we will encounter) & back to normal.

Will just add a couple of token photos of Prague & say goodnight (9.30pm here). This will probably be my last post until we arrive home. Once organised I will try to write a summary of highlights from our trip.

Not sure if I used this photo before. It was taken in Budapest & is one of the infamous Beer Peddle Bars. We also saw some in Amsterdam & it is powered like a push bike. 6 guys get on & peddle as fast as they can. There is a beer tap & the faster you peddle, the more beer comes from the tap. Very funny to watch & are used a lot for bucks parties etc.

A beautiful spruce tree near the cafe we had lunch at on Sunday.

A ceiling shot in the beautiful Municipal House

Thank you to all those family & friends who have followed our travels since day 1. I really appreciate all the feedback received :)

To our fellow Sydney Swans AFL supporters, we will be nervously watching next Saturday's game against Carlton because we are currently on top of the ladder & they have not lost a game since we left Australia. It has even been suggested we stay away until after the Grand Final in September! Unfortunately the budget will not stretch that far.

Until we return to Oz ......

APT Farewell Dinner - La Rotonde Restaurant

Sunday Evening July 6th 2014

Tonight we had an included farewell dinner, provided by APT in the award winning La Rotonde Restaurant located in our hotel, the Raddisson Blue Alcron.

The restaurant is decorated in the same Art Deco style as the rest of this hotel.

We were given a menu with 3 choices of entrée, main & dessert, plus tea/coffee & 2 included drinks (I had 3 wines & they didn't charge for the extra).

Every single course was delicious.
Entree (everyone at our table had the same) - Duck Liver Pate

Main
I had Salmon

Mike had Chicken

Dessert
We all had the Bohemian Apple Tart which was delicious!

We had great entertainment during the meal by this classical group. They played many different styles from true classical to Abba & The Beatles. Very easy to listen to.

Our gorgeous Tour Director, Adela (Bubbles)

After dinner we decided to go to the hotel bar for a little nightcap before bed. Mike had an Irish Whiskey (note the single cricket ball sized ice cube) & I had a Gin & Tonic.

This story had quite a humorous ending as we were finishing our drink whilst chatting to another couple. Then we decided it was time for bed, so said goodnight to the others & walked off. As we arrived at the lift we were stopped by the bar waiter who was asking for payment for our drinks. Yes after 6 weeks on ships with included drinks we were so accustomed to just asking for a drink & not paying, we totally forgot to pay! How embarrassing! I hope the bar attendant understood when we tried to explain.

 More tomorrow, maybe!

Municiple House, Prague

Sunday Afternoon, July 6th 2014

Because we have really fast WiFi here (and Mike is asleep) I decided to finish todays last sightseeing tour & try to have it uploaded before dinner tonight.

We left by coach at 2pm for Municiple House, an Art Nouveau building completed in the early 1900's. Here are some exterior shots:

I was really surprised by just how beautiful it is in every room we visited. Because photos were not permitted inside unless you purchased a photography permit (they only accepted Czech Crowns & we had only Euros) I could only take outside shots, however, a kind gentleman actually just emailed me a few of his. So not quite what I would have taken, but beggars can't be choosers!

Then we were taken to the beautiful cafe for an APT sponsored coffee & selection of in house cake.

My choice - lots of fruit so virtually calorie free :)

Mike's choice:

And another person on our table:

Back on the coach just after 4pm and back to our hotel. Afew random shots along the way. I just love the colours of some of these buildings.

Tonight we have an included farewell dinner in the hotel restaurant. This is one of only 2 Michelin Star restaurants in Prague, so we are looking forward to it.

Time to put my tired old feet up & rest before getting ready.

More tomorrow, our last full day in Europe as we fly out on Tuesday afternoon.

Prague Castle & Saint Vitas Cathedral

Sunday Morning July 6th 2014

Another very warm day predicted with a top of 30C

Good morning from beautiful Prague!

After a pretty good sleep (think all the noise we heard in the street was celebrations over The Netherlands win in the World Cup Soccer) we showered & went down to breakfast, which was excellent.

Next on the agenda was a city tour by coach & tour of Prague Castle & St Vitas Cathedral. We left at 8.45am & because it is Sunday, traffic was light & we managed to see quite a lot on the way.

This is the largest stadium in the world which has a capacity for 230,000 people. Not much to see on the photo as we were on the coach and very close!

Once at Prague Castle we went on a walking tour with our guide for approximately 1.5 hours (it's very large). Here are a few photos of the castle grounds.

One of the Czech Guards

Changing of the Guard at 11am

And St Vitas Cathedral:

Then we were taken to a lovely cafe where we had an iced coffee 7 back on the coach for return to our hotel.

The famous Charles Bridge, not a very good photo as I was looking into the sun & when I checked them, only this one was recognisable.

We just had a light snack at the hotel for lunch and heading out again at 2pm to visit the Art Deco, Municipal House. More on that next time.
